Carex cherokeensis

Cherokee Sedge shines brightest in spring, with dazzling bright green foliage that is semi-evergreen to evergreen in mild winters, where it provides cover for small animals. This compact, grasslike plant is perfect for small empty spaces in the garden, adding wispy texture that glimmers in the wind. Although it prefers part shade, this sedge can grow in full sun if it is watered during drought conditions. Cherokee Sedge works beautifully for walkways and borders and can be a lawn replacement in areas of low foot traffic. Perfect for rain gardens, this perennial stabilizes soil, preventing erosion once established. In spring, green to gold spikes resembling wheat appear atop the grasslike leaves of this plant, which are pollinated by small insects. Carex species may exhibit dulling of leaves when temps rise in summer, but this is normal for the genus, and Cherokee Sedge is more heat resistant compared to its relatives. Brown leaves may show overtime but cutting them to the ground is not recommended. To keep this plant looking happy, gardeners can comb through the leaves with their fingers to remove brown leaves.
